The Battle of Midway, June 1942, proved to be the decisive turning point of the Pacific War. One of the most celebrated battles in the annals of the U.S. Navy, victory at Midway largely rested on the shoulders of young pilots and gunners flying against the odds into harm's way. While the Japanese planned to lure out and destroy American carriers, Allied code breakers had determined the time and location of the attack. Armed with this intelligence, U.S. Naval Aviators were able to decisively defeat the Japanese forces, sinking four Japanese aircraft carriers. The victory came with great sacrifice, as the Navy torpedo squadrons were decimated, but it was not in vain as this marked the beginning of the end for the Imperial Japanese Navy.
