Building on the success of earlier fighters, the MiG-21 was a highly capable Soviet aircraft. With a delta wing, excellent maneuverability at altitude and capable of exceeding 1,300 mph, the MiG-21 served as an interceptor, flying in at least thirty wars around the world. This included the Vietnam War, where 42% of Navy air-to-air engagements were against the MiG-21, and of the 61 aircraft downed by Naval Aviators, 18 were MiG-21s. This cockpit section was removed from a German Democratic Republic Air Force MiG-21UM and donated to the Museum by Erica Rollings of Savannah, Georgia.
