Description: A sight that struck fear in the heart of any sailor on board an American warship in 1944-1945 was that of a kamikaze diving towards them. This image was shot on board the aircraft carrier Essex (CV 9) on November 25, 1944, the carrier's island framing the enemy airplane. Essex was hit that day, a kamikaze hitting the port edge of her flight deck among planes gassed for takeoff, causing extensive damage, killing 15, and wounding 44.
