Northrop Grumman's RQ-8A Fire Scout Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), derived from the Schweizer 300SP helicopter, served as the basis for the enhanced MQ-8B, which has greater performance, the ability to autonomously take off and land on Navy warships, and the ability to carry an array of detection equipment and armament. The UAV is capable of providing UHF/VHF voice communications relay and has a baseline payload that includes electro-optical/infrared sensors and a laser designator that enables the system to find, track and designate targets, accurately provide data to strike platforms and perform battle damage assessment.
