Navy Museums Temporarily Close

Naval History and Heritage Command has directed all U.S. Navy museums to temporarily close to the public as a precautionary measure to avoid large groups of people to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19.

The health and safety of museum visitors, staff and volunteers is a top priority.

The museums will remain closed until at least November 1, 2020. Museums will reopen when appropriate based on guidance distributed by local health officials, Department of Defense, Department of the Navy, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Despite the closure to the public, staff continue to provide information and resources on Navy history - such as virtual tours, lesson plans, and ideas for crafts - through their websites and social media platforms.

Washington Navy Yard (Apr. 21, 2003) -- The Navy Museum is celebrating its 40th anniversary and the legacy of past naval museums with a new exhibit called, "Spanning Three Centuries: Museums on the Washington Navy Yard." This anniversary exhibit highlights images and artifacts from the Navy's original collection and its early museums. As the largest museum to chronicle the history of the U.S. Navy from its creation to the present, the modern Navy Museum continues to embody founder Adm.
