Submarine No. 27 was laid down as Tuna on 20 October 1909; however, on 17 November 1911, she was renamed G-2 (q.v.) and served in the Navy under that name.

The first Tuna (S. P. 664), a motor yacht built in 1911 at Baltimore, Md., by the Neilson Yacht Building Co., was acquired under free lease from Mr. Edward L. Welch of Philadelphia, Pa., on 11 June 1917 and was commissioned on 12 June 1917. During World War I, Tuna was assigned to the Block Island section base in the 2d Naval District and patrolled the coastline between Long Island and Martha's Vineyard. On 11 January 1919, she was returned to her owner, and hername was struck from the Navy list.
