Canuck (YTB-379)

1944-1962

(YTB-379: displacement 206; horsepower 1,000; length 102'0"; beam 24'0"; draft 9'7"; speed 12 knots; complement 15; class Allaquippa)

The harbor tug YT-379  was laid down at Port Arthur, Texas, by the Gulfport Boiler & Welding Works during 1944. Named Canuck and redesignated as a big harbor tuig, YTB-379, in May 1944,  the ship was placed in service on 8 Auguist 1944.

Initially allocated to the Fourteenth Naval District, headquartered at Pearl Harbor, Territory iof Hawaii, Canuck served in the Pacific theater during World War II.  Removed from active service and placed in reserve in October 1946, Canuck remained inactive until returned to the active list in December 1956 with the Fourteenth Naval District. Reclassified as a medium harbor tug, YTM-379, in February 1962, she was transferred to the U.S. Army later that same year.
