"For bravery and extraordinary heroism displayed by him during a conflagration in in Coquimbo, Chile, 20 January 1909."


Note: Though this source gives his name as George Howard Wheeler, the "Register of the Commissioned and Warrant Officers of the United States Navy and Marine Corps" and the book "Medal of Honor Recipients 1863-1994 -- Volume I -- Civil War to 2nd Nicaraguan Campaign" cite him as George Huber Wheeler.
