Sperry, USN, at the time that the Great White Fleet passed through the Azores, 1 January 1909. The painting depicts a reported incident involving CSS Alabama in the Azores, in about 1862. The Naval Historical Foundation holds a portfolio of presentation photographic prints of this scene, each with an inscription mounted at the left.
