NH 69169 USS S-51 (SS-162)

USS S-51 (SS-162)
Title: USS S-51 (SS-162)
Caption: For weeks the Navy had been at work to raise the sunken submarine, and June 22, 1926, it was brought up to the surface, ready to be towed to the Brooklyn Navy Yard, from where it was sunk, off Block Island, in Long Island Sound. After being supported for four hours by pontoons, they gave way, and S-51 slowly sank back beneath the water. This photograph shows a workman from the salvaging ship hanging on to the pontoon in order to close the air valves, which allowed S-51 to come too much out of the water, 24 June 1926.
