S-531 “Monte” Monroe Haeffner Collection

Photo album of 12 photographs related to USS Birmingham (CL-2) and her crew, from the collection of Mr. Haeffner, who served aboard her in the early 1920s.  The cover of the album includes a hand-tinted photo of USS Birmingham in San Diego Harbor, CA 1921. Each page then contains one photo of a specific group of the officers and crew: page 1:  Captain George B. Landenberger, Commanding Officer; page 2-4:  formal group photos of ship’s officers, Warrant Officers and Chief Petty Officers; page 5-9: formal group photos on deck of the ship’s crew by Divisions (Engineers Division, and First through Fifth Division); page 10: formal group of ship’s Marines with M1903 “Springfield” rifles; page 11: USS Birmingam baseball team ashore, probably at San Diego. “Monte” Monroe Haeffner is seen in a group photo on page 8.
