Title: Rita Burns Photo Collection
Description: Photo album containing 157 photographs from the collection of John F. Tiedman, radioman third class, related to his service aboard USS Rutland (APA-192) during WWII. The collection follows USS Rutland when she arrived at Saipan on 2 March 1945, and then steamed on to Guam. Arriving at Guam her Marine casualties debarked. She then steamed to Tulagi at the Solomon Islands, arriving on 12 March. From there she steamed to Espiritu Santo island of Vanuatu and loaded parts of the 27th Division, 10th Army. Her troop were a floating reserve in the invasion of Okinawa.

The collection contains an itemized list for each photograph in the album and cover subjects such as: crew and group photos of sailors and Marines onboard ship; general ship activities such as unloading supplies and brining aboard causalities; Crossing the Line ceremonies; burial at sea; arrival at Guam; arrival at Espiritu Santo; landing and unloading vehicles at Okinawa; group photos of onboard divisions and departments; inspections; village and city scenes in Leyte and Panay; beach parties and recreation on Ulithi; ship’s sick bay; ship’s officers; and scenes of destruction of Japan. There is a view of USS Mercy (AH-8) before a kamikaze attack. Also included are several images of the original collector, John F. Tiedman.
