UPDATE: Due to high temperatures, the WNY tour has been abbreviated to a 10 minute outdoor tour, followed by a 20 min indoor tour at the National Museum of the U.S. Navy.

In cooperation with Archaeology in the Community and DC Archaeology Month, Naval History and Heritage Command (NHHC) is hosting a DOD Archaeology Event at the Washington Navy Yard (WNY). The experience focuses on the Underwater Archaeology Branch (UA) of the NHHC and is followed by a tour of WNY. Visitors will be guided through the laboratory spaces of UA. You will receive a brief introduction to DOD Archaeology, and Underwater Archaeology especially, as it relates to DOD. Following that, you will visit our macro artifact lab, wet lab, and collection spaces. A team member is available at each station to provide an introduction to the space, objects, and processes you see before you. This will include conserved examples of ship’s cannons, artifacts currently in conservation, and collection pieces recovered from sunken military craft. The WNY Tour will follow from the UA spaces. The tour at the UA spaces will take about 50 minutes, and be followed by a 30 min WNY tour.

Accessing the Washington Navy Yard (WNY)

The Washington Navy Yard does restrict access for visitors. Please meet at the WNY Visitor Center address provided above. NHHC staff will be on hand to escort tour groups onto the base and to the event spaces from there. In order to allow for escort, please ensure attendees have a form of identification with them. That will allow the NHHC staff to escort past the gate and onto base property. Once on base property, please accompany the NHHC staff to the tour spaces. Staff will arrive at the start of each tour time (1000, 1100, 1200, and 1300) to escort each new group on.

Visitor access to WNY is only available on foot by pedestrians. There is no on-site parking for visitor vehicles on the weekend. There are several off-site parking locations, which include the Nationals Parking Lot W (601 L St SE, Washington, DC 20003) and Colonial Parking (300 M St SE, Washington, DC 20003). Other options are also available in the Navy Yard neighborhood to the west of WNY.

If using public transportation, the closest metro stops are Navy Yard/Ballpark (Green/Yellow) and Eastern Market (Blue/Orange/Silver). The closest bus stop to the WNY Visitor Center is 11th Street and O Street NE.
