Title: Saucer, USS San Diego, #2017-008-022
Caption: A ceramic saucer with gold and blue decoration recovered from the WWI-era armored cruiser USS San Diego (Armored Cruiser No. 6).
Description: A saucer for a demitasse-style coffee cup recovered from USS San Diego (Armored Cruiser No. 6). The decoration on it indicates that it would have been used in the wardroom mess. On the base, there is a maker’s mark in red that reads “SHENANGO POTTERY CO. NEW CASTLE, PA.” Near the maker’s mark are the numbers “10-17”, also red, which indicates a date. The Shenango Pottery Company of New Castle, Pennsylvania, produced pottery under a variety of names beginning in 1902 and continuing at least into the 1960s.
