Deck Light, CSS Alabama

<p>Porthole-like object with a fractured glass lens set in a tapered brass rim, surrounded by a lead sleeve. Remains of the light brown wood deck surround the circular glass and brass rim then jut out to the left and right of the glass, where the large metal fasteners that held the deck to the beams are still hammered through.</p>
Title: Deck Light, CSS Alabama
Caption: Deck light consisting of a fractured glass lens set in a tapered brass rim, surrounded by a lead sleeve, post conservation treatment.
Description: The glass allowed light into the lower decks of the ship and alleviated the need for candles during the day. The Alabama collection includes several of these deck lights. The wrecksite of CSS Alabama, a Confederate commerce raider sunk during an engagement off the coast of Cherbourg, France in 1864, was discovered in 1984 and subsequently investigated by French and American archaeologists.
