Newspaper Cartoon -- Peace Proposals

Newspaper cartoon mocking proposals for a negotiated peace
Title: Newspaper Cartoon -- Peace Proposals
Caption: The Tacoma (Washington) Times, August 17, 1917
Description: During the spring and summer of 1917, there seemed to be a window of opportunity to end the war by negotiation. Pope Benedict XV put out peace feelers, and the Central Powers indicated their willingness to come to the bargaining table. Germany even made overtures through neutral Spain. Ultimately, the Allies rejected any possibility of a compromise peace, a move celebrated in this cartoon. The comic is not entirely accurate, however, as in truth the German military was strongly opposed to a negotiated settlement as well, and in October Germany boldly announced it would never agree to anything less than complete victory.
