1033 Following received from McCully QUOTE On February 5 I reached Archangel. Although there is continuous ice two to three feet thick at the entrance to the White Sea, it is possible for well built merchant vessels to get through with the help of ice breakers.
There is no need for immediate anxiety with regard to conditions in Arachangel which are at present quiet, but reinforcements of reliable disciplined troops are indispensable becuase <because> the situation may become critical very suddenly. UNQUOTE 113508 1033
