Caption: Ghent served as the commanding officer of SS Antilles, a troop trasnport ship, during World War I. After unloading 1,100 soldiers to Brest, France, on 7 October 1917, Antilles sailed back to New York, but was torpedoed and sunk by a German U-boat on the afternoon of 17 October. Ghent was awarded the Navy Cross.
