Lieutenant Isaacs was awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroism as a prisoner of war after USS President Lincoln was sunk on 31 May 1918. Isaacs executed a daring escape and made his way to Switzerland, where he shortly repatriated to the United States. He changed his name to Edouard V. M. Izac in July 1925.
