Caption: Admiral Edward Evans, 1st Baron Mountevans, a celebrated British officer and explorer. This photograph is from a newspaper clipping found in the diary of Commander Joseph K. Taussig.
Description: Evans was already a celebrity by World War I for taking part in two Antarctic expeditions. He was among the last to see polar explorer Robert Falcon Scott alive when their two parties split up during the Second Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913). During the war, he commanded the destroyer Broke, and famously rammed a German submarine during the Battle of Dover Strait (20-21 April 1917).
