Caption: The Fanning with depth charges -- known among sailors as "ashcans" because of their shape -- ready to deploy. Using depth charges, she and her sister ship Nicholson persuaded Kapitan Gustav Amberger of the submarine U-58 to surrender. To the right is the destroyer Sigourney.
