Rear Admiral William T. Sampson, Commander, North Atlantic Fleet, to Commodore John A. Howell, Commander, First Blockading Squadron.

U. S. Flagship New York, 1st Rate,

Guantanamo Bay, Cuba,

August 6, 1898.

S I R :--

Referring to the telegram sent yesterday to Commodore Remey,1 I desire to inform you that, by order of the Navy Department, just received, the Marine Battalion will be sent to the Isle of Pines instead of to Nuevitas; therefore my instructions with regard to taking possession of the port of Nuevitas, is cancelled, so far as the Marine Battalion is concerned.

I believe however, that it is very desirable to take possession of Nuevitas, and hold it, if you find it practicable to do so.

The “AMERIA” returned to Key West, and is directed to give you this communication.

Very respectfully,

W T Sampson

Rear Admiral, U. S. Navy,

Commander in Chief, U.S.Naval Force,

North Atlantic Station.
