List of Volumes of Letters Received by the Secretary of the Navy From Officers Commanding Squadrons (Entry 45)
The list which follows is arranged by squadron. The information provided includes the date coverage of each volume, the officer writing or forwarding the letters, the name(s) of his flagship(s), and the roll on which the volume of letters is filmed in NARA Microfilm Publication M89, Letters Received by the Secretary of the Navy from Commanding Officers of Squadrons ("Squadron Letters"), 1841-1886. Most of the volumes reflect an organization by squadron and officer, however, in some cases the volume contains letters to a particular officer who commanded ships in more than one squadron. In these cases the letters were microfilmed with the appropriate squadron. This squadron is shown with the listing for the volume and there is a cross-reference from the squadron and roll where the letters are filmed back to the volume where the original is located. In other cases, there are letters to the same officer and the same squadron in two nonsequential volumes. These are not cross-referenced. Finally, there are volumes with unrelated letters from different commanders that are filmed on different rolls.
