Trenton IV (JHSV-5)

2015-

The capital city of New Jersey and of Mercer County, located at the head of navigation on the Delaware River, about 28 miles northeast of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. On Christmas night 1776, General George Washington led the remnants of the Continental Army across the Delaware River in a blinding snow storm. At dawn on 26 December, he surprised and defeated the Hessian garrison at Trenton, inflicting nearly 1,000 casualties and capturing substantial supplies and ordnance. More importantly, his victory revived the cause of independence that had suffered greatly during his retreat from New York following the Battle of Long Island the previous August.

The fourth U.S. Navy ship named Trenton. The first Trenton, a wooden-hulled screw steamer, served with some interruptions (as was common to ships of that era) from 1877-1891. The second Trenton, a light cruiser (CL-11), served from 1924-1946. The third Trenton, an amphibious transport dock (LPD-14), served from 1971-2007. For her Command Operations Reports see (http://www.history.navy.mil/research/archives/command-operations-reports/ships/t/trenton-lpd-14-iii.html).

(JHSV-5: displacement 2,460; length 338'; beam 93'; draft 13'; speed 21 knots; complement 22, troop capacity 312; aircraft, up to two Sikorsky MH-60 Seahawk helicopters; class Spearhead)

Resolute (JHSV-5) was renamed Trenton at some point prior to her keel-laying on 10 March 2014 at Mobile, Ala., by Austal; launched on 30 September 2014; sponsored by Ms. Virginia A. Kamsky, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Kamsky Associates, Inc.; completed her acceptance trials in the Gulf of Mexico on 13 March 2015; and is scheduled to be placed in service later in 2015.

The Military Sealift Command will operate the joint high speed vessel, which can embark a company of marines or soldiers. Trenton has a flight deck for helicopter operations, and a loading ramp to enable vehicles to quickly drive on and off the ship. The ramp is designed to accommodate the limited piers and quay walls often encountered in developing countries.
