P. K. Bauman was built in 1912 by M. M. Davis and Sons, Solomons, Md. as a freighter; acquired by the Navy under charter from the above 28 May 1917; and commissioned at Norfolk 10 August 1917, Lt. Charles F. Chambers, USNRF, in command.
P. K. Bauman was assigned to Squadron 4, Atlantic Patrol Force, during World War I on overseas escort duty. While patrolling off L'Orient, France, she struck a rock 12 January 1918 and listing badly, was taken in tow by Raymond J. Anderton, but eventually sank.
