Invincible II (T-AGM-24)

1987–

The second U.S. Navy ship named for the positive quality trait. The first Invincible, a cargo ship acquired for the Naval Overseas Transportation Service during World War I, retained the name she carried at the time of her acquisition.

(T-AGM-24: displacement 2,535; length 224'; beam 43'; draft 15'; speed 20 knots; complement 20; armament none; class Stalwart)

Invincible (T-AGOS-10) was laid down on 2 May 1986 at Tacoma, Wash., by Tacoma Boatbuilding Co.; launched on 8 November 1986; sponsored by Mrs. Mary S. Metrey, wife of Richard E. Metrey, Director of Surface Programs, Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Navy; and was placed in service with the Military Sealift Command (MSC) on 30 January 1987.

Invincible’s original primary mission was to operate the AN/UQQ-2 Surveillance Towed Array Sensor, a passive undersea surveillance system. The ship collected, processed, and transmitted acoustic data from the system to other commands. She was initially home ported at Little Creek, Va. Invincible was subsequently refitted as a missile range instrumentation ship and on 4 April 2000 reclassified to T-AGM-24. The ship utilizes high-quality, dual-band Cobra Gemini S- and X-band phased arrays to support ballistic missile treaty verification worldwide. The MSC retains custody of the ship for USAF operational deployment.
