Explorer, a patrol vessel, was built for the Coast and Geodetic Survey at Wilmington, Del., in 1904. She was turned over to the Navy on 22 May 1918 and commissioned on the 3d of June, Lieutenant W. H. Stanford, USNRF, in command. Explorer patrolled the canneries and fishing grounds in Bristol Bay and other coastal waters of Alaska until returned to the Survey Bureau by order of 31 March 1919.
