East Boston (Auxiliary Gunboat)

1898-1899

The Navy retained the name carried by this vessel at the time of her acquisition.

The ferry boat East Boston, built in 1892 at East Boston., Mass., by Atlantic Works, was purchased by the Navy from the city of Boston on 2 June 1898; and commissioned on 5 July 1898, Lt. L. L. Reamey in command.

The converted ferry served at the Boston Navy Yard until decommissioned on 3 September 1898. Stricken from the Navy Register after being "condemned as unfit for further service," she was appraised, then sold at public auction on 19 July 1899 to Arthur J. Phillips, Harry L. Maynard, Theodore J. Woo, and John L. Watson of Portsmouth, Virginia, for $38,091.
