CSS Washington was formerly USRC Washington seized by the authorities at New Orleans, when Louisiana seceded on 31 January 1861. In June 1861, Lt. D. D. Porter, USN, commanding USS Powhatan, in a letter to Secretary of the Navy, reports her fitting out there and nearly ready for sea.
