Shrapnel

CSS Shrapnel, a small craft, apparently unarmed, was very actively employed in the James River, Va., with Acting Master J. Trower, CSN, in command. She served to tow fire craft, deliver mail and torpedoes, and as a picket boat in 1864-1865. She was among the ships destroyed by the Confederates after surrender of Richmond, Va., on 3 April 1865.
