Scope and Content Note
This collection contains two series of information: (1) Historical Files and (2) Administrative Files.
The historical files contain general information on U.S. and foreign submarine programs from about 1915 to 1955 (8 feet). Included are data on German and U.S. submarine operations in World War I, the technical development of submarines between the wars, and the characteristics of World War II submarines, including German U-boats taken over by the U.S. at the end of the war. This series also contains a set of U.S. Submarine Conference reports from 1926 to 1953 and personal and official files maintained by Commander Francis S. Low, Captain James Fife, Captain Frank T. Watkins, and Captain Karl G. Hensel while assigned to the Submarine Warfare Division.
The second series is the administrative files of the Underseas Warfare Division, 1944-1954 (16 feet). Most of these date from 1950-1951 and are arranged by Navy Filing Manual Symbols. Some miscellaneous subject files (including those relating to the Low Board Report) are included.
This collection should be cited as the Records of the Chief of Naval Operations Undersea/Submarine Warfare Division, Archives Branch, Naval History and Heritage Command, Washington, D.C.
