Scope and Content Notes

This collection contains materials relating to VADM Sabin's service in Southeast Asia (Vietnam) at the end of the French colonial period in 1954 through the end of the administration of President Diem in 1963. From July 1954 to April 1955, he commanded the Sea Forces of Operation PAS SAGE TO FREEDOM in which over 310,000 Vietnamese people and more than 57,000 tons of U.S. origin military equipment were transported in U.S. ships from Communist held Northern Indo-China to free South Vietnam. During this period he had personal contact with leading officials of the U.S., French, and Vietnamese governments, including the President of South Vietnam, Ngo Dinh Diem.

Historical materials in the collection include correspondence, messages, papers and reports on Operation PAS SAGE TO FREEDOM, and newspaper clippings of his naval service in the Dominican Republic in 1957. Miscellany in the collection includes a court decree from the Texas Republic period (1843) and materials relating to World War II.
