The papers of Commodore Richard Dale were transferred to the Naval History and Heritage Command in September 1971 by Rear Admiral John K. Leydon. The collection came from the estate of Edward C. Dale and the surviving members of the Dale family authorized the donation of the collection to the history command archives.
The original documents were permanently transferred to the Library of Congress Manuscript Division in 1976. A copy of the collection was made and is maintained in the Navy Archives.
The collection was also microfilmed and assigned the number ER 27 Richard Dale Papers. The microfilm cannot be located in the records of the Early Research Branch (Early History), the Archives Branch, or the Navy Department Library.
