Description: Donation of several thousand images related to Naval Group China (which RADM Miles commanded) during WWII. Ordered in the early period of World War II to duty as Commander, US Naval Group, China, he served 4 May 1942 until August 1945, first in the rank of Commodore, later in the temporary rank of Rear Admiral. During the War, members of the US Naval Group in China served in scores of Chinese units all over that country and contributed vitally to the blows of the Pacific Fleet against Japanese-held islands, the Japanese Navy, and, finally, the Japanese homeland.

Box 6-9: unfoldered 4x5 negatives labeled, SACO (Sino-American Special Technical Cooperative Organization), 1944-1945.  Subjects include – facilities and buildings, river patrols, aircraft, White Cloud airfield, general events and parties, President Franklin D. Roosevelt memorial service, Canton Harbor, India-China convoy, shipyard sites, etc.

 

Box 10-13 unfoldered 4x5 negatives, 1943-1946. Subjects include – scenic views of China, military personnel, facilities and buildings (military & civilian), vehicles, pistol competition, military events, camps, inspections, Chinese officials, etc.

 

Box 14 – three file folders with the following subject titles within envelopes: NAVU-1, Calcutta – general base & visitors, printing unit – Calcutta, motors & garage Calcutta, Assam Oxygen Unit, people, Col. 4, NAVU-7, NAVU-6, & end of war.

 

Box 15 – four file folders with the following subject titles within envelopes: NAVU-9 (dogs, pigeons, sabotage, radio, supply, & classes), NAVU-9 construction, decorations & awards, Roosevelt funeral ceremony, & NAVU-10.

 

Box 16 – five file folders with the following subject titles within envelopes: S-4, burning ships, master print file, bombing of Pucheng, construction of new #1 house, Thailanders, misc. negatives, Kinyang Aerology Station & Com Chek, chaplain, and Kweiyang, India (Camp Knox, Calcutta).

 

Box 17 – four file folders with the following subject titles within envelopes: S-2 (Canton docks, radio broadcast station, industrial Chinese buildings, aircraft, White Cloud A/F, Japanese intelligence teams, buildings, airfields after surrender, burning ships, intelligence detachment, panoramic of Amoy & Kulangsu, tanks, railroads, ), S-8 parachute, and NAVU-3.

 

Box 18 – six file folders with the following subject titles within envelopes: propaganda posters, target range & training, horses & stables, S-5 radio (station & communication equipment), S-9 medical, NAVU-14, unit 9 misc. unit 10, S-8 Aerological section & staff, Camp Knox, Camp Regent & hostel #2 (Calcutta), NGC misc., and General Tai Lai.
