Secret Agent Mrs. Rose Oneal Greenhow, Secret agent for the Confederacy.
Title: Secret Agent Mrs. Rose Oneal Greenhow, Secret agent for the Confederacy.
Caption: Mrs. Greenhow and her daughter. Mrs. Rose Oneal Greenhow was a secret agent of the Confederacy, and undoubtedly rendered valuable service to the authorities in Richmond, and was, in consequence imprisoned by the Federal authorities in Washington. Later, she went to Richmond and served in the hospitals there for some time; after which she sailed from Wilmington, N.C., for Europe in the interest of the Confederacy. It was on her return trip that she lost her life just as she reached the shores of North Carolina. The CONDOR, a blockade runner, on which she was a passenger, was chased ashore by the USS NIPHON, (Acting Master Kemble, commanding), a short distance above Fort Fisher, N.C. on October 1, 1864. Mrs. Greenhow, fearing capture and treatment as a spy, prevailed upon the CONDOR'S captain to send her ashore. Unfortunately, her small boat capsized and she alone was drowned. She is buried at Wilmington, N.C.
