Title: Whaleback barges.
Caption: 2 of 26 whaleback barges built in U.S. 1888 to 1897 to the design of Alexander McDougall. 17 were lost 1892-1935 but 2 survived until scrapped in 1965. 40 whalebacks were built in all, including one passenger ship. The design was planned to offer less wind and wave resistance than conventional ships but the boats were difficult to handle unless fully loaded.
