Title: Admiral Cornwallis's retreat from the French Fleet
Caption: Action between British and French, 16 June 1795. Stipple engraving, by Wells after Anderson, published in the "Naval Chronicle," vol. 7, 1802, by Bunney and Gold, London. The action depicted occurred on 16 June 1795, in the Bay of Biscay, when a British squadron of five battleships and two frigates, under Admiral William Cornwallis, came upon a vastly superior French force. Cornwallis was able, through superior seamanship, to escape with only the most minor damages. The engraving shows the British ships in the center, with the French frigates on the left and the French battleships behind.
