USS North Carolina (BB-52), 1919 Program -- construction cancelled in 1922

In January 1920, the keel of USS North Carolina, a 43,200-ton South Dakota class battleship, was laid at the Norfolk Navy Yard, Portsmouth, Virginia. The ship was suspended in February 1922, under the terms of the Washington Naval Limitations Treaty, and construction was later cancelled. North Carolina was stricken from the Navy List and sold in October-November 1923. She was subsequently broken up on the shipbuilding ways.
