In January 1920, the keel of USS North Carolina, a 43,200-ton South Dakota class battleship, was laid at the Norfolk Navy Yard, Portsmouth, Virginia. The ship was suspended in February 1922, under the terms of the Washington Naval Limitations Treaty, and construction was later cancelled.
