Description: Photo #: S-584-182 U.S. AirPlane Carriers No. 1 & 2Battle Cruisers Converted ... February 18, 1922 Preliminary design plan for an aircraft carrier converted from battle cruisers of the Lexington (CC-1) class. This drawing was sent on 22 April 1922 to the Secretary of the Navy in response to characteristics issued by the General Board on 17 February 1922. The terms of the Washington Treaty of 1922 provided for the conversion of two incomplete capital ships to aircraft carriers, and ultimately Lexington (CC-1) and Saratoga (CC-3) were selected.and became aircraft carriers designated as CV-2 and CV-3, respectively. This plan provides eight 8-inch guns, electric drive machinery, and a speed of 34 knots in a ship 850 feet long on the waterline, 104 feet 10 inches in beam on the waterline, and with a normal displacement of 38,830 tons. Displacement under a special treaty definition was 33,000 tons as also shown here. The original document was ink on linen (black on white). The original plan is in the 1911-1925 Spring Styles Book.
