American Corvette USS HORNET Escaping from HMS CORNWALLIS, April 1815
Title: American Corvette USS HORNET Escaping from HMS CORNWALLIS, April 1815
Caption: On 28 April 1815, the 22-gun corvette USS HORNET, Captain Biddle, in company with the 22-gun corvette USS PEACOCK, Captain Warrington, when off Tristan d'Acunha, were chased by the British 74-gun ship HMS CORNWALLIS, bearing the flag of Rear Admiral Sir George Burlton. When the two vessels took different courses CORNWALLIS pursued the HORNET. While in chase, one of the CORNWALLIS' marines fell overboard and, while heaving to in order to pick up the man, HORNET got such a start that CORNWALLIS was unable to make up for it. HORNET reached the United States without a gun or scarcely a musket on board, everything heavy and moveable having been thrown overboard during the chase.
