Caption: Pioneer of submarine warfare, located in Magnolia Cemetery, Charleston Ssouth Carolina. He was born in Sumner County Tennessee and sponsored the building of two submarines before the construction of the submarine named H.L. HUNLEY in his honor. He lost his life when the Confederate submarine torpedo boat H.L. HUNLEY failed to surface from a practice dive in Charleston harbor on 15 October 1863.
