Caption: Photographed on the ways at the Royal Navy Yard, La Spezia, not too long before launch on 10 July 1878. Note the large opening in the hull amidships for installation of the 45 meter long, 550mm thick iron armor belt. The hull was built of iron, with wood backing for the armor.
