Plane's air speed was 227 knots (ground speed 231 knots) and its altitude was 306 feet. Sequential camera photograph, showing the trajectory of the torpedo in relation to the forward motion of the aircraft. See Photo # NH 88452 for a companion view of a lower speed (139 knot) torpedo drop from a similar altitude (339 feet). Note reference in the bottom text line to another torpedo drop from much higher altitude (2400 feet) and speed (410 knots) which was not photographed due to camera limitations. These tests were part of efforts to improve the performance and survivability of aircraft torpedo attacks. Copied from an original negative held by the Naval Underwater Systems Center, Newport, R.I.
