Photo #: NH 79360-KN Omega Gray "Low Visibility" System
Title: Omega Gray "Low Visibility" System
Description: Omega Gray Low Visibility System Contemporary drawing of a camouflage system devised in 1917-1918 by Loyd A. Jones for use on vessels operating in the Atlantic Ocean above Latitude 45 North, where the average weather is 70% cloudy. It was intended to produce the lowest feasible visibility under those conditions. A description of this camouflage system is on pages 40-42 of The Science of Low Visibility and Deception as an Aid to the Defense of Vessels Against Attack by Submarines, by Lindell T. Bates. Published by the Submarine Defense Association, New York City, 1918. In 1974 the original volume was in Record Group 45 at the U.S. National Archives. This drawing is Figure 20 of that publication. U.S. Naval History and Heritage Command Photograph.
