Caption: British SHORT (S-27) pusher biplane on the launching ramp built on the forecastle of the battleship HMS HIBERNIA, circa May 1912. Piloted by Lieutenant Gregory, R.N., this plane (No. 38) made the first takeoff from a moving ship, being launched from HIBERNIA'S ramp on 9 May 1912, while the ship steamed at fifteen knots in Weymouth Bay. No. 38 differed from the basic short S-27 design, being equipped with a longer upper wing and a float undercarriage. Copied from the Cincinnati Enquirer, 28 January 1915.
