Caption: Naval Aviator #16. This was taken aboard USS LANGLEY (CV-1), circa 1922. On 22 March 1922 LANGLEY was commissioned with Commander Whiting as the temporary commanding officer. On 18 November 1922, Piloting a PT seaplane, he made the first catapult launching from LANGLEY. He died on 24 April 1943 as a Capitan. USS KENNETH WHITING (AV-14) and Whiting field in Pensacola, Florida, are named in his honor.
