Title: USS PRICHETT (DD-561)
Caption: On 29 July 1945, while on station off Okinawa, PRICHETT was rescuing survivors from USS CALLAGHAN (DD-792) which had just sunk as a result of being hit by a kamikaze. During the rescue, PRICHETT was also attacked by a kamikaze which was shot down but exploded six feet off her port quarter killing two men and seriously wounding another. PRICHETT steamed back to Pearl Harbor and then to Puget Sound where she was laid up in dry dock until the end of 1945. She was placed out of commission on 14 March 1946, at Long Beach, and placed in the Pacific Reserve Fleet. Damage to a compartment below decks is shown in this image.
