Title: USS BANCROFT (PG)
Caption: BANCROFT was a steel gunboat commissioned 3 March 1893. She was designated as a practice ship for the Naval Academy midshipmen and stationed at Annapolis. In September 1896 she sailed to join squadron and for the next year and a half protected American interests in the Eastern Mediterranean. During the Spanish-American War she convoyed troop transports to Cuba and was on blockade duty at Havana and the Isle of Pines. She returned to Boston and was placed out of commission 30 September 1898. She was placed in and out of commission two more times before she was finally transferred to the revenue cutter service on 30 June 1906.
