Title: Wilkes Charles
Caption: Com. Charles Wilkes, U.S.N. photograph by Brady, engraved by J.C. Buttre. Born New York 1798. Appointed midshipman, 1 January 1818. In 1830 he was appointed to take charge of government charts and instruments in 1838 he took command of the expedition that spent five years exploring islands and continents. He claimed to have discovered Antarctic continent. In 1861 he was in command of USS San Jacinto when they removed Mason & Slidell from "Trenty" Published numerous works. Died Washington, D.C. 8 February, 1877.
