Caption: Photo by Black, engraved by J.C. Buttre. Goldsborough was born in Washington, D.C., 18 February 1805. Appointed Midshipman, 18 June 1812; Lieutenant, 13 January 1825. He was officer of the frigate HOIO during the Mexican War and was Superintendent of the Naval Academy, 1853-1857. During the Civil War he commanded North Atlantic Blockading Squadron. He retired 6 October 1863 and died in Washington, D.C., 20 February 1877.
